Score 89+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2008

Medium ruby-red. Musky aromas of raw crushed berries, medicinal cherry, tobacco and nutty oak. Broad and voluminous, but showing more sheer power and concentration today than flavor definition. This rather chunky wine is uncompromisingly dry and youthfully unformed. Finishes with major palate-saturating tannins.

Not surprisingly, Switchback Ridge has made a bevy of amazing Petite Sirahs, and the 2005 Petite Sirah Peterson Family Vineyard possesses off the charts richness as well as a full-bodied style offering notes of espresso, ground pepper, blackberries, camphor, and incense. It is an exotic, full-bodied, enormously concentrated wine to drink over the next two decades. Previously recommended: 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Peterson Family Vineyard (92), 2004 Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard (92+), 2004 Petite Sirah Peterson Family Vineyard (95). Tel. (707) 738-6187
