Overripe apple, white raisin and decadent lily perfume comprise the heady introduction to a creamy, rich, marzipan-laced Auslese that is almost the alter ego of its Domprobst counterpart. An impression of overripeness and confection lingers into the finish, whose sweetness fortunately doesn’t overwhelm. It will be interesting to see whether greater definition or animation emerge with bottle age, though I’m mildly skeptical.

The 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is still very reductive but already indicates great purity, freshness and brightness as well as loads of crushed slate. Lush, round and sweet, with tropical fruit aromas, the wine has a dense and super lush texture, mild and delicate acidity and hidden salinity. This generous but fine and elegant Auslese is super charming and seductive even for skeptics who fear the raciness of Riesling. 2018 is the vintage to start with Riesling, especially mouth-tickling wines like this. Bottled with 8.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 419 in May 2019.
