From St. Helena, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Moose Valley Vineyard shows slightly deeper, richer fuller-bodied mouthfeel, plenty of crème de cassis, incense and barrique scents along with camphor and forest floor. This is a beauty as it has been in other vintages and should drink well for 10-15 years.

(winemaker Mike Hirby made approximate blends of these 2012s on the morning of my visit; this is from clone 337 planted on volcanic ryolite ash): Inky, utterly primary aromas of blackberry, cassis and bitter chocolate. Sweet, plush and highly concentrated but extremely young and in need of air. With its strong material and broad, ripe tannins, this densely packed cabernet holds out excellent potential.
