The 2022 Chardonnay Soberanes Vineyard underwent a 17-month élevage in foudre and barrique, the last five months of which were in stainless steel. Energetic aromas of citrus rinds and crushed stones lift the otherwise tropical, ripe, flashy nose. The palate is beautifully bracing and focused, framing a delicately concentrated core that propels the tangy, lifted and stony finish.

I continue to love this vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The 2022 Chardonnay Soberanes Vineyard saw a native fermentation and spent 17 months in 35% new oak. Rich, opulent notes of ripe stone fruits, fresh croissants, toasted almonds, candle wax, and subtle nutmeg and baking spice notes all shine in this fabulously textured, layered, medium to full-bodied Chardonnay. With the concentrated, powerful style that this site always seems to deliver, it stays balanced, has nicely integrated acidity, and this compelling character that keeps pulling you back to the glass. It's up with the finest Chardonnay I've tasted from this site. As with most 2022s, it's already showing incredibly well and is ready to go. Drink bottles over the coming 4-6 years.

The 2022 Chardonnay Soberanes Vineyard is a serious wine. Mineral and tense because of the extremely rocky site, it opens with a kick of salted Meyer lemon, crushed stone and chalk. The 2022 is built around texture more than fruit presence, but it makes for an engaging and savory style of SLH Chardonnay. A dusting of white pepper hits the finish, wrapping up with mouthwatering acidity. I’ll be curious to see if it puts on some fruit weight in bottle, as it’s a little coiled up right now.
