My favorite of the lineup, the 2007 Arnot-Roberts Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard is fermented with 100% whole-cluster and comes from a vineyard sitting at 2,500 feet in elevation. It displays captivating, northern Rhône-like aromatics of vibrant raspberry and black cherry fruit, bacon fat and spice rack notes that are intermixed with underbrush, thyme and rocky notes. Not as wild as the Griffin’s Lair but with the elegance of the Hudson Vineyard, this beauty is medium bodied with a smooth, delicate texture, fresh, integrated acidity and a classy, long finish. This picks up a subtle, chocolaty richness to the fruit with air. Gorgeous, and if drinking anytime soon, an hour in the decanter is recommended.

Glass-staining ruby. Hypnotic nose displays scents of red berries, cherry, smoked meat, potpourri and minerals; smells like a high-end, old-school northern Rhone. Pure raspberry and bitter cherry flavors are underscored by smoke, graphite and cured tobacco. Candied violet and rose notes build with air and carry through a strikingly long, juicy finish. This vineyard sits at an elevation of 2,500 feet and the wine was fermented entirely with whole clusters.
