Score 93/100 · Drink 2015-2022, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2015

The 2012 El Diablo is a new, Grenache-based red from a site on Eastside Road in Sonoma, not too far from Windsor. Dark red and purple stone fruits, smoke, licorice and spices meld together in the glass in a decidedly dark, fleshy wine loaded with personality. The supple, expressive finish is inviting. The Diablo is 88% Grenache and 12% Syrah done with whole clusters.

(a blend of 88% grenache and 12% syrah, from a warmer site facing south and east): Bright, deep red-ruby. Complex aromas of flowers, sandalwood, smoke, earth and stone. The palate shows an almost liqueur-like ripeness but also excellent purity to the warm flavors of black cherry, coriander and anise. Still a bit youthfully tight on the back end but finishes with noteworthy aromatic lift. The syrah component was vinified with whole clusters.
