Score 87/100 · Drink 2000-2010, Robert Parker, Dec 2000

The dense ruby/purple/plum-colored 1996 Merlot Howell Mountain offers smoky, earthy, and cherry aromas with new wood in the background. The wine is fleshy, medium to full-bodied, with good underlying acidity and tannin, but no hard edges. While powerful and concentrated, it is accessible. Consume it now and over the next decade. Tel. Bright, deep ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of dark berries, minerals, leather and fresh blood. Juicy, intense, slightly rigid flavors of dark berries. Doesn't quite deliver the richness and complexity the nose promises. Fairly tannic finish.
