Score 91/100 · Drink 2016-2030, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2016

The 2005 Faugeres has a very ripe, mulberry and licorice-scented bouquet that only just manages to contain some volatile acidity that detracts from its delineation. The palate is quite agreeable: modern in style but balanced, more reined in than the nose with licorice-infused red fruit, espresso and dark chocolate notes towards the finish. It does not have the complexity of the finest 2005 Saint Emilion wines and the aftertaste feels a little short. However, it has a sense of place and the finish is nicely focused. You could broach this now or leave it for 8-10 years. Tasted September 2016.

Purple to the rim, the 2005 Faugères is a powerhouse at 14.5% alcohol, with notes of graphite, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice and truffle. Some incense also makes an appearance in this full-bodied, super-concentrated, modern-styled St.-Emilion. If I hadn’t known, I would have guessed was the luxury cuvée Péby and not the basic Faugères! This has a wonderful nose of dark fruits, tea, and slightly toasted oak. Very clean and precise, more so than the past vintage. I am loving the succulent fruit and velvety tannins, it is very hard not to drink this right now, but will be much better after 2014. A stylistic change after owner Silvio Denz took over.
