Score 90/100 · Drink 2015-2023, Robert Parker, Oct 2015

The 2013 Zinfandel is 100% Zinfandel aged 16 months in all French oak, of which one-third was new. This is a beauty. Spicy, rich and briary, with medium to full body, peppery earthiness, red and black fruits, excellent freshness and purity, it should drink nicely for 7-8 years.

The 2013 Zinfandel Howell Mountain is tight and unyielding today. There is no shortage of depth, intensity or structure, but the 2013 appears to be going through a close phase following its bottling. This is by far the least expressive of Outpost's 2013s on this afternoon.

The 2013 Zinfandel is shaping up to be superb. Dark and explosive, the 2013 also has a level of textural elegance that is missing from the 2012. Herbs, blackberry jam, mint and sweet spices are some of many notes that flow through to the striking finish. The 2013 brings together power and finesse to a degree that is seldom found in Zinfandel.
