Good full dark red. Cassis, red cherry, currant, plum, tobacco leaf, licorice and hints of leather and game on the rather mellow nose. Shows similar flavors and a restrained sweetness on the palate, where firm framing acidity is in reasonable balance with the wine's fruit. Finishes with slightly tart, drying tannins that reach the front teeth. With slightly edgy acidity, the lingering flavors of dark raspberry and spice cake are fresh but a bit lacking in pliancy. The tannins ultimately turn a little gritty and parching. A very dry, rather ungiving Cabernet but not fruit-deficient.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is in a gorgeous spot right now. Aromatically nuanced and yet quite powerful, with plenty of life ahead, the 2001 is a terrific example of Diamond Mountain Cabernet. Iron, grilled herbs, chalk, game, smoke, incense and bright red stone fruits give the 2001 an almost exotic character. The tannins are powerful, yet also beautifully woven into the wine's fabric. Readers who appreciate old-school Napa Cabernet will adore the 2001.
