Score 91/100 · Drink 2007-2015, Robert Parker, Dec 2007

Earthy and animal-like is the dark ruby-hued 2005 Syrah Griffin’s Lair. It offers plenty of cassis, bacon fat, and forest floor notes along with a notion of new saddle leather. Well-made, medium to full-bodied, and dense, with higher acids and a more noticeable structure than its siblings, it should drink well for 7-8 years. This joint project of Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts is a tiny boutique operation focusing on fewer than 1,000 cases of wine. Trivia buffs will be interested to learn that the beautiful label of California Fuchsia was painted by Margaret Biever-Mondavi, Nathan Lee Roberts’ grandmother. Tel. Dense purple. Strong blackberry and blackcurrant aromas, with suave floral and Asian spices adding complexity. Silky and very fresh, with impressively deep dark berry flavors and a building note of floral pastille. The remarkably persistent finish emphatically repeats the dark berry notes. This is incredibly delicious.
