Score 94/100 · Drink 2021-2028, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2019

From vines planted in 1969, the 2017 Pinot Noir West Block is pale to medium ruby in the glass. The nose is scented of rhubarb, cranberry, raspberry, stewed black tea leaves and potpourri with lovely rosewater, cola, pipe tobacco and tangerine peel peeking out with time. Medium-bodied, the slowly opening flavor layers are much less overt than the rest of the lineup from J. Rochioli at this stage, but it's wonderfully nuanced with soft, grainy tannins and juicy freshness, finishing long.

The 2017 Pinot Noir West Block is a heady, sumptuous wine that captures the intensity typical of Russian River Pinots. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, rose petal, lavender and hard candy all blossom in this sumptuous, racy, supremely inviting Pinot Noir. This is a wine with explosive aromatics and huge, rich fruit. Superb! (AG)
