The 2018 Highlands is an unusual blend of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Matthias Pippig crafts this wine in a style that emphasizes energy and aromatic intensity moreso than the volume that characterized his earlier wines. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, rose petal, blood orange and spice lend striking aromatic top notes to this super-expressive, intriguing blend. This is an especially savory style, with the fruit more in the background.

The Cabernet Franc-based 2018 The Highlands is another beautiful wine from Matthias. Savory herbs, ground pepper, and red and black fruits define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a great texture and outstanding length. My only concern is that it has a touch of dry tannins, but I think this holds it together and will have a decade of longevity.
