Score 93/100 · Drink 2017-2025, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, Sep 2017

Composed of 65% Syrah with smaller portions of Grenache, Petite Sirah, Viognier and Roussanne, the medium garnet-purple colored 2014 Misfit opens with provocative violet-laced black cherry and blackberry notes over hints of black pepper, cinnamon stick, licorice and orange peel. Full-bodied, concentrated and laden with fresh, energetic black berry and spice box flavors, it has a firm frame of ripe, rounded tannins and well-played freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

The medium ruby, semi-opaque colored 2014 Misfit (mostly Syrah blended with 15% Grenache, 10% Petite Sirah and tiny amounts of Viognier and Roussanne) offers a forward, seductive array of sweet cherries, black raspberries, peppery herbs and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, silky and seamless, the wine has a great texture and is good to drink over the coming 7-8 years. Based out of Santa Barbara, Sanguis’s Matthias Pippig continues to make a singular lineup of wines that run the gamut from rich, unctuous Syrahs, to old-school Pinot Noirs, to borderline orange wines. There’s some true gems in the lineup, with the 2014 1/1 Syrah being the best wine I’ve tasted from the estate.
