Score 90/100 · Drink 2015-2020, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2015

The 2012 Misfit (Syrah) shows the more flamboyant side of Syrah. Full-bodied and voluptuous, the 2012 hits the palate with notable density. Black cherries, lavender, spices and mint are all very much alive in this entry-level wine from Sanguis.

Score 93/100 · Drink 2015-2023, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Aug 2015

A blend of 89% Syrah, 9% Grenache and 2% Viognier that saw roughly 10% whole clusters and 25 months in 25% new French oak, the 2012 Syrah Misfit is a smoking wine, and in Matthias' lineup, it represents a rock-solid value. Showing lots of oak in its smoky, meaty, peppery and dark fruit-scented bouquet, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful density and a pure, clean profile that keeps you coming back to the glass. Showing better from bottle than barrel (which is a good thing), drink this terrific, character-filled Central Coast Syrah over the coming 7-8 years.
