Score 90/100 · Drink 2015-2019, Robert Parker, Dec 2014

The 2012 Zinfandel Robert’s Block comes from a site planted in 1981, and was aged 20 months in neutral French oak. It reveals ripe black cherry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with notions of earth, pepper and herbal undertones, crisp acids and a vibrant, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. Eric Sussman has always done a terrific job with Zinfandel.

Bright purple. Highly fragrant bouquet of black and blue fruits, woodsmoke and pungent Indian spices; smells a lot like syrah. Shows very good depth and energy, with appealing sweetness to its cassis, cherry liqueur and licorice pastille flavors. The persistent, youthfully tannic finish repeats the smoky note and shows very good clarity.

Radio-Coteau's 2012 Zinfandel Robert's Block is rich, sumptuous and layered to the core. The flavors are quite primary, as one might reasonably expect, and there is wonderful purity in the glass. At the same time, the 2012 needs time to develop the full breadth of its aromatics. The wine's balance and overall sense of harmony suggest a bright future.
