Aged in 22% new French oak, the deep purple-black colored 2017 Syrah James Berry Vineyard gives up dried violets, chocolate, olive, cured meats, woodsmoke and peppercorn with baked blackberries, black cherries, red fruit sparks, iron and exotic spices. The palate is medium to full-bodied and offers loads and loads of flavor layers. It has firm, chewy tannins and great freshness on the long, mineral-driven finish. 193 cases produced.

The 2017 Syrah James Berry Vineyard comes from unquestionably one of the Grand Cru sites in California and is sourced all from the lower half of the Bone Rock parcel. Harvest here occurred on October 6, and the wine was brought up in 22% new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Beautiful notes of blue fruits, kirsch, crushed violets, and white pepper all dominate the bouquet. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with good concentration, it has a silky, elegant texture, fine tannins, and a great finish. It’s young and still tight, so do your best to hide bottles for 3-4 years if you can.

One of the highlights in this range, the 2017 Syrah James Berry Vineyard shows just how pedigreed Justin Smith's Paso Robles site is. Mike Smith has chosen to pick this fruit at a level of ripeness that conveys freshness. aromatic intensity and purity, all of which complement the natural richness of the vineyard beautifully. The James Berry Syrah is a wine of real personality and character. I loved it.
