(15.5% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Reticent aromas of black raspberry, plum, coffee and mocha. Sweet and chewy if a bit unrefined, with chocolate and nutty oak flavors dominating. Finishes with dusty tannins and a repeating chocolatey quality. The crop level here was very low due to shatter, but I don't find enough nuance. Still, this is fresher than the 2007 version.

One of the finest Merlots made in Napa Valley is the 2008 Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard. Sumptuous aromas of sweet kirsch and blacker fruits along with coffee bean, chocolate and herb scents jump from the glass of this dark plum/ruby/purple-colored effort. This dense, silky textured, round, chewy Merlot can be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years. This tiny producer consistently fashions excellent wines (Bob Foley is the winemaking force behind these efforts). Tel. (707) 967-8987
