The 2006 Baker Lane Syrah Sonoma Coast Estate sports Cornas like aromatics of cedar smoked meats, pepper, iron, leather and spice that are all wrapped around a vibrant core of blackberry fruit. The wine is complex, dense and meaty. On the palate, it’s medium bodied with solid, concentrated fruit that’s kept light and balanced by fresh acidity, a savory texture and a touch dry tannin. Drink this excellent Syrah over the next 5 to 8 years.

Ruby-red. Varietally accurate aromas of smoked meat, cherry skin, cassis and black pepper; smells very Old World. Spicy dark berry and bitter cherry flavors are framed by firm tannins and gain sweetness and depth with air. Impressively juicy, with very good finishing clarity and spicy persistence.

This 100% Syrah is a dead ringer for a French Crozes-Hermitage. Notes of black cherries and currants intermixed with tapenade, tar, and spice strike me as very French in orientation. The cool climate of the Sonoma Coast has given the wine good acidity and yet impressive flavor intensity, medium body, and lots of spice and earth. Tel. (510) 845-0693; Fax (510) 845-0689
