The 2013 Ghemme Chioso dei Pomi is a powerful heady wine, or as powerful as Ghemme can be. Sweet red plum, spice, mint, leather and dried leaves abound. The 2013 is perhaps a touch rustic, especially in its slightly oxidative, earthy aromatics, but it certainly has plenty of both personality and character.

Ghemme is one of the historic appellations of Alto Piemonte, and the standard blend is 85% Nebbiolo (also called Spanna in these parts) with smaller parts Vespolina and Uva Rara. The Rovellotti 2013 Ghemme Chioso dei Pomi (a blend of 90% Nebbiolo and 10% Vespolina) offers delicately evolved nuances with licorice, cola and campfire ash next to dried cherry and black currant. The big-picture ensemble is fragile and pretty, giving this wine subtle and silky appeal.
