Bigger, richer and more complex with additional structure is the 2007 Syrah Estate. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as intense fruit on the attack, including abundant peppery blackberry and meaty notes intermixed with hints of smoke and earth. Full-bodied and rich with more structure and density as well as a longer finish, it is drinkable now, but will be even better in another 1-2 years and should last for at least a decade. The ever reliable Tom Dehlinger continues to turn out some of the most fairly priced wine in all of California. I’m glad to see he has added a tiny quantity of rose to his portfolio. As he said, it is his first “non estate” wine in 25 years. Dehlinger’s Pinot Noirs have an enviable track record of aging well for at least a decade even in challenging vintages. One does not generally think of the Russian River area as prime Cabernet Sauvignon territory, but in certain vintages, Dehlinger’s Cabernets can be amazing. Moreover, they sell for about 50% less than comparable Cabernets from Napa Valley. Tel. (707) 823-2378; Fax (707) 823-0918

Glass-staining purple. Youthfully wound-up aromas of blackberry, cassis and bitter chocolate, plus a strong note of licorice. Deeply pitched dark fruit flavors are given a bitter edge by a dark chocolate quality and are framed by chewy tannins. The finish is firm, gripping and intensely spicy. Distinctly potent syrah with excellent potential: no way I'd be opening this one anytime soon.
