Score 90/100 · Drink 2021-2032, Neal Martin, Jan 2022

The 1996 L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne has a deep amber hue. It has a very Tokaji nose, well defined, but maybe not as complex as more recent vintages. Barley sugar, creme caramel and caramelised pear, a touch of peach skin. The palate is very well balanced, unctuous and maybe just missing a bit of acidity on the finish that renders it a little cloying compared to the 2004 and 2006. Drink over the next decade.

The 1996 l'Extravagant is pure Sauvignon Blanc. It boasts a deep gold color, in addition to an unctuous texture, fabulous freshness, and notes of grapefruit and subtle oak (the 200% new oak treatment is utilized for the whopping 100-125 cases produced). A huge wine, with lots of acidity and little mass and volume, this tour de force in wine making should drink well for 50+ years. Readers should note that this offering is only available in one-bottle wood cases! Anticipated maturity: 2007-2050+.
