(33 percent new oak) Lurid ruby-red. Sexy, oak-spiced aromas of candied dark berries, cola and incense; a mocha nuance gains strength as the wine opens up. Plush blackberry and cherry cola flavors show a spicy edge of white pepper and very good energy for their heft. Seamless, sweet and expansive, in the style of the vintage, displaying a velvety texture and impressive finishing persistence.

The 2014 Pinot Noir Aegrina Vineyard, predominantly from vines planted on uplifted basalt soils, is not a usual bottling for Penner-Ash. Lynn Penner-Ash told me that they liked the fruit so much that they decided to release this 2014. I can see why - the nose is nicely defined with vivid dark cherry and briary scents, hints of bay leaf emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red cherry and strawberry fruit, almost sorbet-like in terms of freshness with a juicy, orange zest-tinged finish that completes this well-crafted and delicious Pinot Noir. This is actually one of the best releases from Penner-Ash in 2014.
