Score 97/100 · Drink 2025-2045, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Mar 2023

Drawn from specific parcels of the Stags Ridge Vineyard, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Basalt offers initial impressions of smoky pencil shavings and crushed stone, followed by intense cassis notes. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, this is darn impressive, finishing long, with lovely purity of fruit in the end. It looks as if it could be a 25-year wine. Nine barrels were produced.

A bigger, richer wine, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Basalt has a similar darker cherry, plum, and currant-driven core of fruit as well more minerality, iron, and roasted herb notes with time in the glass. The palate is on another level and is full-bodied, deep, rich, and concentrated, with incredible tannins as well as balance. This is pure Napa Valley Mountain Cabernet. Hide bottles for 2-4 years, and it's going to have 25 years or more of overall longevity. Bravo!

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Basalt is a hulking, potent wine. Blackberry jam, sweet spice, espresso, mocha and chocolate are all dialed up to the maximum. The alcohol here feels a bit high, though. Next to the other wines in this range, the Basalt is a bit less well balanced.
