The 2018 Tempranillo Wonderful Nightmare comes from the Stoney Vine Vineyard and is a complex, exotic example of the variety, offering loads of herbes de Provence, peppered meats, charcoal, and violets, all supported by a wonderful core of ripe red, blue, and black fruits. With medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless texture, and ripe tannins, it's another remarkable, pure, balanced wine from The Walls that can be drunk any time over the coming 10-15 years, if not longer. An up-and-coming estate that readers need to try is The Walls, which was created by Mike Martin, with the wines made by Todd Alexander. They produce several wines from throughout the state, all of which merit serious attention.

Dark red. Plum, redcurrant, tobacco and a note of iodiney rare steak on the expressive nose; the Rocks character is so strong that I might have guessed Syrah! Tightly wound but not hard; quite penetrating and salty in the early going, with the bloody meat and leather flavors joined by peppery herbs and earth. More about Rocks soil than primary fruits, this wine has the energy to repay a year or two of patience. A real blood and soil wine; uncompromising, seriously saline and distinctive but a bit extreme.
