Inky purple. Layered with bacon fat, smoke, and violets. Very much Côte Rôtie style. Touch of vanilla and heavy spice. Olive tapenade and pepper. It's super-ripe but balances that with mineral and savoury character, fine-grained tannin and balanced acid. (SCJ)

Based on 96% Syrah and 2% each of Roussanne and Viognier, the 2021 Syrah York Mountain has a juicy, medium to full-bodied, ripe, yet still somehow cool climate-like personality in its red, blue and black fruits as well as notes of peppery herbs, iron, black olive, and violet-driven aromas and flavors. It's balanced and has a layered, sexy mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This magical Syrah flirts with perfection. It benefits from plenty of air (I followed this bottle for multiple days), and it’s going to see its 20th birthday in fine form (although I love it today).
The 2021 Syrah York Mountain is dreamy, blending sweet herbs and olives with wet stones and blackberries. Cool-toned and collected, it sweeps across the palate with polished red and black fruits, motivated by vibrant acidity as crisp mineral tones define the close. Hints of sour citrus and spice resonate throughout as this finishes with staining length and concentration yet somehow remains remarkably fresh, leaving behind a lingering note of salted licorice.
The 2021 Syrah York Mountain was co-fermented with 2% Roussanne and 2% Viognier and matured for 18 months in 20% new French oak. It has layered aromas of blueberry, blackcurrant, lilac and coffee beans; wafts of olives, white pepper and sage show off the cooler vintage. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated core of savory fruit, loads of powdery tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, floral finish. Reminiscent of Côte-Rôtie, it will be long lived in bottle. 474 cases were made, which will be released in the fall of 2024.
