The 2000 Petite Sirah Reserve, a 158-case blend of 90% Petite Sirah and 10% Petit Verdot, primarily from two vineyard sources, Barcini and Kenefick Ranch, came across as tough, austere, and hard to penetrate. Its saturated purple color is accompanied by copious amounts of astringent tannin as well as hints of ripe black fruits, all submerged beneath a structured, firm personality. Moderately saturated bright ruby. Spicy, lively aromas of blackberry liqueur, blueberry, bitter chocolate, violet, licorice, cracked pepper and eucalyptus. Sweet and expressive on entry, then tightly wound in the middle, with juicy, sharply delineated black fruit and mint flavors. Finishes with subtantial tongue-dusting tannins and a distinctly firm edge, but does not come across as green.
