The 2002 Syrah Estate’s blue/purple color is followed by classic aromas of melted road tar, creme de cassis, and blackberries, and a structured, potent, peppery, medium to full-bodied personality with undeniable elegance. (16. 5% alcohol) Bright, saturated ruby. Blackberry, violet, gunflint and menthol on the explosive nose. Dense, rich and superconcentrated, with extremely ripe, somewhat high-toned flavors of blackberry, creme de cassis and violet. Impressively fresh for a wine so high in alcohol. Finishes with fairly sweet tannins.
The dense plum/purple-colored 2002 Syrah (100% Syrah) offers aromas of forest floor as well as abundant cassis. It is much more uni-dimensional than its siblings revealing good suppleness as well as an up-front, forward plumpness, an enticing texture, and a fleshy, endearing personality. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. The 2002s were bottled about five weeks before I tasted them, so perhaps some allowance needs to be factored in these tasting notes.
