St. Helena’s 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard exhibits graphite, damp earth, forest floor, sweet creme de cassis, and blackberry notes that dominate this wine, which is both powerful and elegant. As I have written in the past, Beringer offers between 200-250 cases of each of their single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons that go into their Private Reserve program. Interestingly, as good as the single vineyard cuvees tend to be, and they’re all very different, the Private Reserve blend is as good or better than the finest single vineyard, demonstrating that the blending process is essential and important. Red-ruby. Very ripe black raspberry, smoke, mocha and mint aromas. Then dense, creamy and sweet, with a suggestion of chocolate liqueur contributing to the fat impression. This has the mid-palate stuffing to support its big, slightly rough tannins.
