Another inky, saturated purple/blue colored effort that needs short term cellaring is the 2013 Syrah Sierra Mar Vineyard. It reveals Cornas like notes of cassis and purple fruits, iron, pepper, creamy licorice and violets to go with a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, yet still tight and tannic feel on the palate. Give it 2-3 years and enjoy bottles through 2025.

The 2013 Syrah Sierra Mar Vineyard is quite a bit riper and more fruit-driven than the Rosellas. The inclusion of 30% whole clusters helps, but there is a sense of heaviness that is impossible to miss, while the alcohol is at times noticeable. It will be interesting to see how the 2013 responds to the final phase of aging and then bottling, but today, it seems to lack a bit of focus.
