Panzano in Chianti. Deep ruby with broad orange-tinged rim. Very nutty and herbal at first. Sweet, almost jammy palate. Good contrasting acidity adding tension. Sweet, intense finish with bitter tannin. Seems overworked? (WS)

The 2001 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio a’ Frati, shows fragrant aromas of plums and red currants with notes of incense, a stylish and shapely medium-bodied format, and very silky tannins from start to finish. Deceptively ready, it will drink well for another 7-8 years. Importer: Montecastelli Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 414-4898
