A big, stunning nose of black raspberry, earth, exotic spice, violets and integrated wood notes. Medium to full bodied with a gorgeous mouth filling, smooth and viscous texture. Shows plenty of sweet fruit and a slight herbaceous note that adds to the complexity but still holds everything together on the nice finish where a decent amount of sweet tannins show up. Great stuff.

A beauty, the 2003 Syrah Eaglepoint Ranch emerges from a vineyard planted in decomposed sandstone at an 1,800 foot elevation. It includes 75% stems. This European-oriented, dense ruby/purple-tinged Syrah reveals hints of tapenade, blackberry, and raspberry fruit, a beautiful texture, lovely elegance, and medium to full body. It is a stunning Syrah to drink over the next 5-10 years. It’s hard not to enjoy a visit with Wells Guthrie given his enthusiasm and passion for accessing top-notch vineyards and producing high quality wines. His impressive resume includes positions with Michel Chapoutier and Gerard Chave as well as a short stint as a journalist for The Wine Spectator. Guthrie is one of the Rhone Ranger mavericks who utilizes considerable stems in his winemaking as well as a variety of barrels, ranging from small casks to the large, 600-liter demi-muids. Such Old World winemaking techniques as minimal intervention, natural yeast fermentations, and no fining or filtration has resulted in thrilling wines of undeniable character and personality. Tel.
