Score 91/100 · Drink 2018-2023, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Dec 2018

This delightfully and invigoratingly evokes peach and green plum near their cores in its combination of succulent juiciness, invigorating fruit skin tartness, pit piquancy and salinity. The feel is firm, which, combined with the aforementioned tartness, makes for a rather tight palate impression. But generous primary juiciness, cooling fresh fennel, and mouthwatering salinity combine to ward off any sense of constriction or austerity on the admirably sustained finish.

From sandy and stony gneiss soils of the cru that is located between the Kellerberg and the Loibenberg, the 2016 Ried Höhereck Riesling Smaragd has a clear and open bouquet of white fleshed fruits intermixed with some iron-flavored stony aromas. Full-bodied, round and very elegant, the wine is provided with delicate acidity as well as finessed and salty minerality that carries this 2016 into a long and fresh finish. This is a pure and tensioned, remarkably good and refreshing Riesling from this small 2.74-hectare cru. Bottled in late June 2017, tasted a week later in July.
