The 2012 Laborde Double Select Syrah is very dark and brooding, almost black, from the first quality Syrah vineyard planted in Argentina by a man called Laborde who brought the best Syrah cuttings from France and planted them in La Consulta. This 2012 has a ripe nose, with notes of violet sweets, spiced up plums, smoke and cherries. It has a medium-bodied palate with freshness, good acidity, kind of cool-climate Syrah, juicy tannins and good length. This is a very good Syrah. Drink 2014-2019. Luca is another project from Laura Catena, started when her son Luca was born. The idea was to produce wines different from those produced by Catena, so she started with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, which were not really well covered in the Catena portfolio at the time. (aged in 50% new and 50% once-used French oak for 12 months): Good bright medium ruby. Sexy aromas of black raspberry, spicy oak and leather. A juicy, nicely pliant midweight, with well-integrated acidity giving shape and definition to the blackberry and pepper flavors. Not at all a gamey style of syrah. Light on its feet and long on the aftertaste, finishing with broad, fine-grained, easygoing tannins that will not get in the way of early enjoyment.
