The 2013 Syrah Santa Barbara County is a terrific value priced Syrah that has tons of character. It will also appeal to lovers of northern Rhone Syrahs. Coming mostly from Bien Nacido, with 25% from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard, aged 22 months in 25% new French oak, it has a touch of brett as well as lots of gamey meats, peppery herbs and dark fruit in a medium-bodied, fresh and focused style. I like its concentration and balance, and it should drink nicely for 4-6 years.

Qupé's 2013 Syrah (Santa Barbara County) is a good wine to drink now and over the next few years. Dark cherry and mocha flavors are front and center, but a hint of brett masks the purity of the fruit, which is a shame, as the 2013 is otherwise juicy and inviting. I would prefer to drink the 2013 sooner rather than later, although my real preference would have been to see a cleaner and purer wine because there is a lot of potential being left on the table.
