The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer Ranch exhibits slightly sweeter fruit and more plushness than the Rancho del Oso, but it is similar. As I have written in the past, Beringer offers between 200-250 cases of each of their single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons that go into their Private Reserve program. Interestingly, as good as the single vineyard cuvees tend to be, and they’re all very different, the Private Reserve blend is as good or better than the finest single vineyard, demonstrating that the blending process is essential and important. Good red-ruby. Pungent aromas of red berries, cedar, tobacco, cocoa and mint, plus a complicating woodsy element. Sweet and dense but suave, with a rocky quality giving grip and shape to the juicy red berry and tobacco flavors. Less powerful than the Bancroft Ranch cabernet but conveys an impression of mineral energy and finishes with refined tannins and impressive aromatic persistence. A beauty.
