Score 92/100 · Drink 2018-2026, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2019

From more volcanic soils, the 2016 Chardonnay Portola Springs Vineyard is a prettier, more vibrant and focused expression of Chardonnay, offering exotic notes of tart pineapple, melon, and flowers. With good acidity and ample depth of fruit, it’s drinking nicely today yet has the class and balance to evolve for 7-8 years.

The 2016 Chardonnay Portola Springs Vineyard offers lovely aromatic presence to play off its overt fruit. Lemon confit, mint and orange peel are all pushed forward in this delicate, super-appealing Chardonnay from Fogarty. Volcanic soils and a cool micro-climate are two of the signatures at Portola Springs.

The 2016 Chardonnay Portola Springs offers up a subtle bouquet of waxy lemon rind, brioche and wet rocks. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, tensile and acid-driven, with plenty of cut but not much flesh on its bones. Reminding me of the 2007 white Burgundies in their youth, I suspect it will become a bit more giving with a year or two in the cellar.
