Eymael’s 2007 Erdener Pralat Riesling Auslese is elixir- and liqueur-like in style and intensity, featuring aromas and flavors of tangerine, honeydew melon. But at the same time, there is a rhubarb-like, invigorating tartness woven in that offers a fresh fruit aspect, and a honeyed note signaling discreet but flattering botrytis. This is luscious and satiny yet delicate and buoyant in the best 2007 manner. Hints of salt and licorice add interest to its long finish. It should be worth holding for 15-20 years. I’ve gotten used to the idea that Robert Eymael is now back in the forefront of Mosel growers, so it was with great anticipation and hope that I tasted his 2007s and I was not disappointed. Eymael started picking the last week of September (although he only finished November first) and that tastes as though it were a tad early. His Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese feinherb was a bit green in character – though still tasty. But things picked up from there.
