The 2009 Syrah bursts from the glass with jammy black fruit, mocha, spices, chocolate and French oak. There is considerable power and richness in the glass, but not a whole lot of true varietal character. Layers of textured fruit wrap around the super-ripe fruit. Caliza's Syrah is a wine of considerable potential, but all the elements don't seem to quite come together in the 2009.
