Score 89/100 · Drink 2017-2022, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jul 2016

(aged in 40% new oak, including some Darnajou barrels, for 25 months): Bright, deep red. Lovely Blue Mountain Cabernet Franc scents and flavors of raspberry, blackberry, flowers and spices. Supple and classically dry but with a sexy restrained sweetness to its flavors of dark berries, espresso and spices. Finishes with notable breadth and suave tannins.

The 2013 The Archimage (56% Cabernet Franc, 38% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc) shows a darker, smoky edge, with more black olive, ripe black fruits and graphite emerging with time in the glass. Like a lot of 2013s, it lacks a huge back-end level of concentration, yet has medium to full-bodied richness, excellent purity and ripe tannin, all suggesting it will drink well for a decade.
