Score 92/100 · Drink 2018-2025, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Dec 2018

Scents of green bean, rhubarb and Szechuan pepper set the tone for a palate performance that is crunchy and tart, and a finish that adds smoky and incisive notes as well as an invigorating bite of cress. There is a sappy sense of concentration here that befits a Smaragd, yet allied to a surprising sense of lift for a wine of that genre. The finish also boasts a sense of transparency to crystalline mineral impingements that I don’t typically associate with wine from the relatively gentle slope and deep soil of Kreutles.

RS 1 g/l, TA 5.4 g/l. Honey, floral notes, baked apple – plenty of flavour going on here, and not as overweight as some Smaragd can be. Impressive ripeness of fruit, while retaining refreshing structure and good concentration. (RH)
