Score 89/100 · Drink 2000-2015, Robert Parker, Dec 2000

The excellent 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon is an exceptional effort in this irregular vintage. It offers sweet cassis fruit, smoke, cedar, and spice aromas as well as flavors. Medium to full-bodied, pure, with an open-knit texture in addition to an expansive, ripe taste and finish, it is not a huge effort, but there is good depth. Drink it over the next 14-15 years. Medium ruby-blue color. Pungent aromas of cassis, licorice, menthol, dried herbs and woodsmoke. Cool, fairly intense black cherry and blueberry flavors are very primary and slightly tart. Seems to be absorbing the oak quickly, with the result that the wine has a slight bitter edge. A rather muscular cabernet from stony soil, finishing with chewy, somewhat rustic tannins.
