Score 95/100 · Drink 2010-2080, Pierre Rovani, Feb 2004

Candied tangerines and spices burst from the glass of the 2002 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Oestricher Lenchen. Lush, medium to full-bodied, thick, and syrupy, it conquers the palate with profound waves of jellied red fruits, apricot jam, white peach essence, and hints of molasses. This stunning wine, harvested at 205 Oechsle has the residual sugar and acidity to outlive any present-day subscriber to The Wine Advocate. Projected maturity: 2010-2080. Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300

(for 375 ml.) In keeping with the character of the entire 2002 Spreitzer collection, there is great subtlety to the orchard fruit aromatics here. Peach and apricot are pasted with honey on the palate, then seasoned with mineral salts and enlivened with lemon juice. As thick and creamy as this is, it's also delicate in touch and utterly refreshing. You might think that a $200 half-bottle is a pretty extravagant luxury, but believe me, a single sip of this will last you a long time. Astonishingly, this is the lighter and ostensibly lesser of two Lenchen TBAs, the other of which was still actively fermenting when I visited and will eventually be auctioned. 2 stars.
