Medium ruby. Superripe, high-toned aromas of black raspberry, roasted meat and musky espresso. Fat, sweet, deep and rich; thick with fruit. More primary than the Hillside Vineyards syrah, but also with a more velvety texture. Finishes with substantial but sweet, fine tannins.

Score 90/100 · Drink 2004-2014, Robert Parker, Aug 2004

The 2002 Syrah England-Shaw Vineyard is the most powerful of this portfolio, tipping the scales at a whopping 16.4% alcohol. However, it is not hot. The potent, enticing nose of blackberries, smoked barbeque meats, Asian spices, chocolate, and frying lard is followed by a port-like, full-bodied effort with huge density as well as richness. Offering a massive mouthful of fruit, glycerin, and extract, it is a “love it or leave it”, impeccably well-made Syrah that will drink well for a decade. Tel. (510) 865-7007
