The latest installment of a proverbial hit, Leitz’s 2007 Rudesheimer Drachenstein Riesling Dragonstone continues (as its full name demonstrates) to come from a single vineyard, one from which by now Leitz takes a significant percentage of the crop. There has never been a better example of the electric intensity and uncanny balance Leitz is able to achieve in this site between taut, invigorating acidity and a high level of residual sugar that comes off as barely sweet. Zesty lime, peach, pink grapefruit, and red currant ally themselves to cinnamon spice, salts, and wet stones, and finish with simultaneous penetration and delicacy. Enjoy this great value anytime over the next 3-4 years. Johannes Leitz has expanded his production enormously over the past decade by crafting outstandingly well-balanced, vivacious, and affordable residually sweet Riesling from ostensibly lesser sites in Rudesheim, and with the assistance of his importer Terry Theise, marketing them with enormous success in the United States. Interesting lychee notes on the nose. Not that sweet and quite a bit of extract. Very good for what is effectively an entry-level wine, even if it fades a little fast. (JR)
