Violet and lavender florals give way to crushed stones, sage and blackberries as the 2021 Passing By opens in the glass. This sweeps across the palate, lifted and lean, with tart wild berry fruits propelled by brisk acidity. It leaves a pleasantly bitter tinge and hints of fine tannin, while tapering off with medium length and a subtle tinge of licorice.

The 2021 Passing By is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec matured for 17 months in 75% new French oak. The nose is youthfully coiled, its bright red and black currant fruit accented by wafts of bay leaves, vanilla, cedar and allspice. The medium-bodied palate is bursting with abundant, spicy fruit. It has a frame of velvety tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, baking spice-laced finish. It will benefit from 3-5 years in bottle.

More Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated, the 2021 Passing By is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec. It has lots of up-front sweet currant and chocolaty dark fruits as well as roasted herbs, spicy oak, and chalky minerality. This rich, full-bodied, sweetly fruited, and concentrated red has plenty of tannins, a good mid-palate, and outstanding length. Give it 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15+. Joshua Harp’s Jada Vineyard, with help from Napa’s Tony Biagi, has leapt into the top handful of producers in Paso Robles over the last few years and these 2021s might be the best yet.
