Score 92/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, Dec 2011

The most polished and pure of the lineup, with alluring notes of cassis, smoked beef, pencil shavings, cedar, and sage, the 2007 Zaca Mesa Syrah Mesa Reserve was aged for 21 months in 70% new French oak. Classic on the palate, with a brilliant texture, notable balance, and a concentrated, dense profile, this serious Syrah needs 2-3 years of bottle age, and should evolve and age gracefully for upwards of a decade. There is a substantial amount of backend tannin here (with a slight dry edge) that will need watching, but this is impressive and I'm a fan.

Score 90/100 · Drink 2011-2021, Robert Parker, Aug 2010

The 2007 Syrah Mesa Reserve was aged in new French oak for 26 months. With the most saturated ruby/purple color of all the Syrahs, the wine exhibits plenty of earth, blackberry, and cassis along with roasted herbs, pepper, and spice. It is the richest and deepest of the wines, and also the most backward. Give it another year of bottle age and drink it over the next decade. Tel. (800) 350-7972; Fax (805) 688-8796
