The 2019 Traisen Bastei GG offers a deep, intense and complex, still yeasty bouquet of perfectly ripe and concentrated fruits intertwined with fine notes of crushed stones (flint stones) and the overall richness of the 2019 vintage. Full-bodied, generous and complex on the palate, this is an intense but also refined and elegant Bastei with lush fruit and a sustainably salty finish. This is an impressively calm and elegant Riesling from a spectacular, very warm vineyard. The 2019 is still on the (promising) road. Tasted at the domain in July and in Wiesbaden’s GG tasting in August 2021.

The Bastei 2019 demonstrates what a year’s bottle-age can do for the complexity of a wine but credit probably also has to go to the very special terroir of red rock rubble. The result is a fine fragrance of spring flowers, stone fruit, a smidgeon of spice and hint of wet pebble. The taste starts off with friendly fruit, before saline minerality and lemony acidity begin to make an impact. Dry and a little dusty, but there’s enough juice to avoid austerity. (MS)
