Score 95/100 · Drink 2025-2033, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Jun 2025

The 2017 Ried Moarfeitl Sauvignon Blanc is a superb success for the Vulkanland Steiermark. The wine is deep, intense and expressive on the terroir-driven nose that pairs savory notes of crushed rocks with seed aromas and notes of red berries (raspberries), salt and lemon juice. The wine is full-bodied, dense and textured on the palate, very long and saline yet also finely juicy. After more than seven years, the 2023 is now in its best shape and reveals an impressively complex finish with first signs of maturity. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Berghausen in April 2025.

Classified as GSTK (equivalent to grand cru) in the private association known as the Steirische Terroir- and Klassikweingüter. On top of a plateau at around 380 m, more gravel here, very windy but quite fertile because no erosion. RS 1 g/l, TA 6 g/l. There’s still a stony/herbal note here but also a slightly riper fruit profile, with grapefruit and lemon. On the palate, really creamy texture, rounded and broader on the palate. (JH)
