Coming from a site just down from Bonnes Mares, the 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is brilliant any way you look at it, offering remarkable freshness in its darker raspberry and cherry-laced fruits as well as violets, beautifully integrated oak, and spicy, chalky, mineral-like nuances. You wouldn't know this beauty comes from a scorching hot vintage, and it holds onto a wonderful sense of freshness and purity, has ripe, polished, yet substantial tannins, a good spine of acidity, and gorgeous finish. It clearly offers incredible pleasure today (I loved drinking it), but it's probably 7-8 years away from its prime drinking plateau.

Tasted blind, Roumier's 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras showed well, exhibiting aromas of raspberries, cherries, peonies and espresso roast, framed by some toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and even lavish, with an expansive attack, a generous core of dark, savory fruit and a framing of satiny structuring tannins. This is quite a ripe, expressive rendition of Les Cras, in keeping with recent vintages of this Roumier bottling, such as 2012.

(13.55% alcohol; vinified with 53% whole clusters): Bright dark red. Very stony aromas of black raspberry, black pepper and smoky calcaire . Large-scaled, dense, slightly medicinal premier cru with full ripeness but a youthfully clenched quality today. Rather powerful on the back end, finishing with sneaky palate-staining length and fine-grained tannins.
